I think the words we use have to match the characters we are writing. I think about Fancy Nancy, all the words that are introduced there but it works because that is how the character is. Stretching is good, as long as it doesn't distort the story.
I agree, Tasha. You don't want to bewilder the reader with too many new words that are unfamiliar or untrue to the character. (That last sentence was for you, Rosalyn. “Bewilder” in present tense!) My least favorite word to say is “moist.” Eww.
